Anal itching is a common condition. The itch, present in or around the back passage, is often intense and may be accompanied by a strong urge to scratch. Also called pruritus ani, causes include dermatological, proctological, inflammatory, infective, metabolic, helminthic, hygienic (washing too much or not enough) and rarely neoplastic.

Anal itching can be associated with redness, burning and soreness.

A careful history, physical examination and investigations will inform the clinician of the likely diagnosis. Treatment depends upon the likely cause of itching. The treatment may be local or systemic.
